Mark Gonzales - 2008
Emportant News was published by Decathlon books and is the first in a series of ten to be published over a two year span. Decathlon Books is a collaborative publishing project initiated with photographer and film maker Peter Sutherland - together we work as the editors, curators and designers for the series.
The images in this book were all taken by Mark Gonzales on a 'Side Kick' phone and then sent to us via e-mail over the course of one year, some were accompanied by a phrase others were attached with no text.
A Side Kick is basically a cell phone with a camera and a keyboard, We remember the name because Snoop Dogg did a commercial endorsing it. When we see Mark with his we automatically imagine that he is texting with Snoop.
Like all the Decathlon books this is printed in Queens on a web press. Everything is intentionally stripped down to the simplest (cheapest) form - with a 2 color cover and the interior printed in black and white on green newsprint / 8.5’ x 11’ / 64 pages.
